Unidentified Apps

Larry 1 year ago • updated by Carlos Marquez V. 4 weeks ago 21

I am trying to understand why my iphone has suddenly started using more data than normal.  The App Tracker says most of the data is being consumed by "unidentified apps" this isn't much help can I get some advice please?

I, too, am having this problem.  I just installed today on my iPhone and 99% of my usage is Unidentified.  :-/

I have a hard time adknowledging that considered nasormal operations my iPhone 6S, current with iOS latest update, indicated on certain times 2 times a week 8 times a month that safari consumed 36 mb & unidentified apps 49 mb & occasionally 2 times a month unidentified app consumed close to 90 mb within an hour that was monitored. Any ideas or suggestions to resolve? Makes me wonder if my phone was hacked tapped .... etc.

Hello Jay,

Currently, My Data Manager can track top 1000 Apps for the App list anything other than the Top apps will be counted under Unidentified Apps.. We are working to improve the App list in a future release.

Hi, iPhone user here

Mainly talking about WiFi traffic, because at this moment I have cellular data disabled.

Is there a way for us to contribute in identifying apps?

I would like to see how many apps there are in the "unidentified apps" category and see the related generated traffic.

When I know which app I'm using that is generating traffic, I would like to "suggest" its name, and if you receive the same suggestion from many users, you can easily add it to the list.

For example, yesterday evening I updated 20+ apps  from the App Store, the traffic was categorized as unidentified traffic...

Hi there, just installed the app and encountered same behaviour.
Allmost all traffic is categorized in "unidentified apps"

Any news about this?

This feature is bugged, sucks your internet data dry and for iphone you can see what app uses how much under celluar settings anyway of all apps you use.

Unless you got unlimited data you should disable this feature. as use tons of data even if you do not use any apps. More report this, this has been sins they added this feature and they do not care.

I've had this exact same issue since turning on the App Tracker feature last week. I have now disabled it. The irony: An app that's supposed to help you control data usage has accounted for more than 80% of data usage in the past week!

@Kavita: Can you please provide the list of "Top 1000" apps to just double check wether some/all of my apps are not on it or if the My Data Mgr App does not recognize them properly?!

I'm having  exactly the same problem (iphone 6s ios11.0.3). I installed MDM to try and find out what app or apps are causing the issue and all it tells me is what I already know, that an unidentified app is using most of my data. Is there any way to isolate the known apps from the unknown ones?

Thanks for trying to help :)

    Dear IPhone Users,

You have a workaround in your iPhone6 for the unidentified apps.

As soon as you have your new data bundle you can reset your data details.

    Go to settings—> mobile network.

Since I have Dutch language I hope my translation is correct

Scroll bit down and see under the mobile data  ‘header’ the consumption of the period so far.

Scrolling more to the bottom you most likely see that some apps can use (green) mobile data with data usage registered and some are blocked (grey) with data usage = 0,00

Now scroll to the bottom and press the option

‘reset your old details’ or ‘renew your details’ or ‘something like that’.

When you do this every new ‘data’ period the unidentified apps will easily be tracked and traced

only I won’t tow s arch for correct mail for my breather

Only I’m search for I’d to fenced imail my brother only sory

I typically use 3 gb of data in a month. In one hour I used 3.9 gb of data somehow, showed up as unidentified app. It also counted against my data allotment with my carrier leaving me with just under a gig left. I have sent support requests and have heard nothing back, thing is I don't plan on being quiet about this. This also happened while I was at home connected to my WiFi. I watch my usage religiously and don't need an app for it, but this is very shady and is questioning what was being sent using the cell data network. Funny how it creates a VPN tunnel too.

This exact same thing just happened to me today. Can anyone confirm it was MDM that caused it?

    @stephen.porter78

I experienced the same in August but was able to prove in my iPhone6 that it had been caused by MDM itself. Therefore I blocked the use of mobile data for MDM.

So far no reaction from MDM team.

Strange thing is that I’m still not able to use my mobile data icw VPN. Only with disabled VPN the mobile internet access can be used

I hope this answers your concern. If you have any other questions, concerns or feature requests, please let us know.

Sometimes,  the app to update on IOS, it needs to be "woken up". This will happen you manually open the app. If you have location services enabled, it will also happen when you make a "significant location change", as determined by iOS.

When the app is woken up, it will add all of the usage since the last time it was awake to the current hour.

This information regarding the ‘wake-up’ perfectly explains why I am some other users suddenly have had a unexpected mobile data usage.

My conclusion is that this app can’t be trusted and used for registration of detailed app consumption when you have limited mobile data.

This is really pity and hope MDM can solve this

I suspected it was the app that made this sudden data consumption. I had to delete de app to avoid this happening again as I ran out of data half way through the month. Please advise if this is ever corrected.
